jan_brittenson
I just noticed my M6 Classic won't close the shutter at 1/4s orlonger. All other times seem to work fine. It opens when I pressthe release but only closes if I move the shutter speed dial. Itdoesn't make the whirring noises it used to at these speeds. Is itlikely a fix-it-myself if I open it up, or should I send it somewhere? Actually, come to think of it 1/8s sounds way too fast. I wonder ifI just hosed a roll of E160T... huw_finney
A bit of grit in the slow speed escapement is probable, the whole thing is quite visible with just the top off. Examine each gear tooth and remove offending item. Somewhere here I posted the top removal procedure.
mskovacs
Huw is correct that the slow speed escapement is probably gummed-up. However, if you had to ask, I assume that you probably don't have any camera repair experience. I'd suggest either learning on a few cheaper cameras first (e.g. Fed, Zorki) or paying for a professional CLA service. The probability that you will marr or damage the camera likely far exceeds the benefit of fixing this yourself.
jan_brittenson
My problem is the camera doesn't really need anything else done...
andy m.
Why is that a problem? In that case it won't be expensive to have a camera tech. do the work.
jan_brittenson
The problem is that it'll take at least week in turnaround and probably cost $150 including shipping -- compared to doing it myself in an hour or less.
andy m.
Jan, if you are confident that you can take the top plate off, and that once inside you can fix it then I guess there is no need to send it away. As a matter of interest though, don't you need a set of "ring tools" to get the top off? Good luck, A
huw_finney
Ring tools can be made quite easily, only needed for the flash contact and the shutter release surround, mine where loose enough to be removable by (a strong) hand. Try a rubber sheet too before making tools. Go for it Jan, Leicas are wonderful to work on.
jan_brittenson
I did search for your posting, but had no success. Any hints on phrases or terms it might show under?
