sven keil
Not everybody is only going out to take pictures...I just came across an article published at Heise (German computer/technology journal) where they reported that Olivier Giroux managed to hack the firmware of the D700 such that the D700 takes videos (Blog of Olivier Giroux http://ogiroux.wordpress.com/2009/01/27/d700-shoots-vide/).
At the moment, this works only with the camera being connected to a computer, and the movie quality isn't something to write home about. But it is amazing anyway, at least to me.
markd2
It's not hacking the firmware. It's simply an SDK (software development kit) available from Nikon which you can use to control the camera and get images from it. The code runs on the PC/Mac and puppetstrings the camera.
