LightJet 5000 or Chromira 30; Can I tell the difference?

Recommended Posts

I have never had any large (16 x 24 up to 20 X 30) color prints made

with a digital system. I have an excellent lab for Ilfochromes. But

I will try digital soon. One lab (Slideprinter in Denver) uses an

ZBE Chromira 30. Another uses a CSI LightJet 5000 (Photo Craft in

Boulder). Assuming an equally good job of drum scanning and

technical ability in running the Chromira and the LightJet, and that

they use the same Fuji CA or FujiFlex paper, is there a noticeable

difference between large prints from these two machines?

Of course, the scanning is another issue. But I am assuming they

both do an excellent job of scanning, and the file size is apparently

the same (about 62Mb for a 35mm slide). If inclined, your

recommendations on specific labs are welcome (western USA

preferably).

BTW, the cost at Slideprinter is 1/3 to 1/2 that of Photo Craft.

I regularly work with both of these labs - both are excellent. IMHO, the LightJet 5000 reproduces a slightly greater range, so the tonality of the prints is more pleasing to the eye. Although this observation is not scientific and I've never done a side-by-side test with the same image (that would be interesting to see - especially if it was off the same scan). I still regularly have Chromira prints done at Slideprinter. The quality is very, very good and the prices are excellent. I tend to go with the LightJet when the original transparency has a lot of contrast and wide range of subtle tones.
