Light Fall-off

Recommended Posts

Shooting a youth soccer tournament using Elan 7N with Sigma EX 120-

300mm 2.8 + 1.4x TC into very strong side- and nearly back-lit

conditions, I experienced light fall-off whether metered evaluative

or partial. Exposures were generally f4 and 1/2000 or 1/4000 with

Fuji Press 800. The fall-off didn't occur when I shot the same lens

w/o the TC at f2.8 at 1/4000. Any comments as to why and how to

avoid in future?

TIA,

Mike

Some teleconverter units work OK with a prime lens, i.e., a 300mm f2.8 lens...but as you have 'discovered' the not-so-good side of a teleconverter with a zoom lens. Sometimes it will work for you and other times you are using film to practice.

Hi Erin, so nice to hear from you,

I bought the 120-300mm at the beginning of the season and haven't looked back. Have 200+ 2mp scans and tons of color negatives from the fall season. I think (modestly now) that a few of them show promise. I have so much to learn. The parents asked that I do a PC slideshow for the banquet and put some of the scans on Ofoto for them, so I've got some pleasant reinforcement. Some even wanted to pay me. In short I'm having big fun!

Thanks so much for the practical, economical advice. I'm so pleased with the lens. Now I have to grow my ability into my gear!
