Lens zoom stuck

  1. My 1.5 year old Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 17-85 mm USM is stuck at the 17 mm zoom level. The zoom ring is arrested
similarly to a telelens where the zoom can be locked. However, as much as I know, this lens does not have a zoom
lock. The camera was not bumped or dropped, this occurred out of the blue. Any advise or do I need to send the
lens back to Cannon for repair?

  2. I would send the lens to Canon. Even if you could make the zoom moving again, it can lock again like it already
did. It sounds like something is broken inside.

  3. I agree: time for a repair. There are some people who have successfully repaired various Canon lenses themselves and posted step-by-step disassembly/assembly instructions, but I don't recall this lens being one of the ones I've seen taken apart. And most if not all of the ones I've seen this done to have been cheaper lenses than this one (i.e. if you can't put the thing together again, it's not a several-hundred-dollar lens you've just ruined). So I'd say this repair is best done by Canon.

  4. If you make a fuss about the lens only being 18 months old they may discount the price. Worked for me!

  5. I've always preferred fixed focal lengths myself. JR
