lens recoating?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This doesn't directly apply to Leica's, but the other forum I asked

in had only a few people with experience respond and I think the

Leica group has more experience in this area than other camera groups

so I hope its OK to ask . . .

Does anyone have any experience they would like to share about

recoating a lens element? I am interested in hearing people's

experience on having an old coating removed and a new coating applied.

I am not talking about polishing a blemish out of the lens itself,

but, rather just a new antireflection layer being applied.

Specifically, would a new antireflection layer applied by a careful

and experienced technician reduce the lens' performance below that of

original factory spec?. The shop I have in mind has a very good

reputation and is Focal Point in Colorado, USA.

My email address is "randallcherry@earthlink. net" for those wishing

to reply in private.

Thanks!

Randall: There has been quite a bit of discussion of late on this topic. Have you checked the archives? I had a DR Summicron cleaned and recoated by Focal Point a couple of years ago. Cost was about $230.00 and he did a good job. The coating was scratched from years of abuse.

Thanks for the links to the recoating threads. I'd already read those comments.

I am finding there are many people with thoughtful and passionate opinions on the subject, but very few people who have actually had a recoat done.

From the few people with actual experience who have commented, it sounds like the recoating process turned out well.

I was just hoping to hear from a few more people with actual experience to expand the set of actual users's opinions.

Thanks!
