Lens for sports events

  1. I'm an artist not a photographer.. let me rephrase. I am a Portrait
painter and need reference tools for fast moving sports. While I
can spend $50 on a brush, thousands on a long range fast lens is not
what I would have enough use for. Is there one that would work that
I could look for used? This is a one time or seldom thing and
happens to be needed soon. D
  2. If it's a one time thing, why not just rent a long range fast lens?
  3. Hi Diann,

I am not sure where you live but in most major cities you should be able to rent rather than purchase lenses that might suit your needs.

  4. Maybe the best place to start is to visit Calumet Photographic at http://www.calumetphoto.com and see if you're near one of their locations.
  5. It depends on what sport and what camera system you already have. For most amateur sports, you can be close enough for a low cost 135 F2.8. For professionnal events, you will need at least a 200mm (F3.5 or 4.0). For high speed from some distance, the 300mm F2.8 on a monopod is great but this one you should rent because it really is expensive.
