stephen_persky
I called to ensure that I would get my Digital Module R when it came out in December. I was very surprise to find out that there was already ready a waiting list. I got on the list, and I was early enough to likely get one with the first shipments. It does kinda feel wierd that I am on a list for a new product I have not seen or read a review on. I guess if it totally sucks at photokina in sept. I can cancel. The CEO of Imacon said in an interview that this Digital Module will incorporate the newest technology. This technology will be going into their new Digital backs, and it has not been seen before. That seems very promising; although, I guess the co-creating company of the Digital Module R would not say it sucks. The leica Digital M is about 2 years away, maybe we should get on that list too. My leica R9 will be here today I will fill everyone in on my inital impression and post some images in a few days. Regards, Steve
klaus_gerhard_vogel
During many years we who work inside the camera industrie are seeing always strongly punished the first people who are buying the new cameras. Especially this is so with Leica because perhaps they have not so much expensed for the pretesting. Of course in case of the Digitale Modul-R there is cooperation of also other quite expert companys. It is also I am surely that the cost of the Modul will lower when past is the first army of buyers.
barefoot
Stephen, Do you think you will still have the R9 in December?
patricks
in my experience, never buy anything of the first production batch of any technology. wait a bit to let them iron out the quirks.
steve g
I'd be shocked if the Digital Module got released on time, but goodluck! I am very excited about Leica going digital for real, certainly has good consequences for the rangefinder line.
stephen_persky
I get my R9 today along with the lenses I ordered. I can hold out until December for Digital. Heck, 6 months without digital may even give me time to really apprteciate film again:) Good advice Patrick. The first model is usually a risk. There are currently a few problem I read about with the Mark II from reading that link you sent me. FOcus problems color shifting etc. Kinda makes me glad I will have film to fall back on. The only thing worse than having non-functioning equipment is missing great photo shots because you have nothing to fall back on. gerald_widen
I'm sure it's been mentioned but how much is this back going to cost?
stephen_persky
About 4500 dollars. The euro is stronger than the dollar, but Leica has locked in a USA price since we would have to pay about 6000 dollars if we had to pay the euro equivalent. Thank goodness for currency futures :)
jim_simmons
I know (I think) that the R9 works with ROM and 3-cam lenses. Will the digital back require the ROM lenses, or will it work with 3-cam lenses?
anthony_brookes5
Steve - don't worry about it being a new product. Manufacturers look after the first purchasers of their products very carefully for obvious reasons. Leica do the same. Whilst you might experience a fault you can be sure that it will be carefully invetigated by Leica -they need to know. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your results. doug herr
Jim Simmons wrote: Will the digital back require the ROM lenses, or will it work with 3-cam lenses?
IIRC this question was asked during the web conference when the Digital-Module-R was first announced. Leica's people said that 3-cam lenses will work fine, just as they do with the film back.
jan_brittenson
I wonder if it will include a viewfinder screen that masks off the unused portion of the frame, or with crop marks. Got to get myself on that list on Monday!
wayne_murphy8
I have no doubt that the digital back will work OK. Leica and Imacon have too much riding on it. But, If Leica does not get some suitable wide angle lenses or wider zooms on the market very soon after, the whole exercise is likely to fail. A digital-specific 14-28/2.8 would be enough for me to buy the digital back. If no new lenses are forthcoming, not only will I not buy it, I will switch to Canon for my SLR solution. For goodness sake, Leica can churn out zoom lenses for its D1 and D2 digitoys and for its crumby point and shoots, but fails to address the serious end of the market. Is anyone home? stephen_persky
1) Leica will have you place a new focus screen with framelines for the 1.37x factor for teh viewfinder. 2) Leica is planning to announce some new lenses at the Sept photokina to supposedly compliment the Digital Back. In the IRC chat that I read, they mentioned new lenses but would not comment on any specifics at all. Regards Steve
