Leica 2F Rewind Lever

  1. I'm not a long time Leica person but I did acquire a nice 2F some months ago, and I thought it worth sharing something I discovered about it. I was disappointed with the lack of smoothness of the film advance, it felt distinctly rough to the extent that I was reluctant to put a film through. I tried a little lubrication of the visible gears, it seemed to improve a little, then reverted to being rough.

I picked it up again a few days ago, and realised what the problem was. The rewind lever was a little loose and tended to move away from its normal position against the end stop. Even with it just slightly off the end stop, the gears were somehow binding and causing the roughness. I just tightened the screw slightly, and now the lever doesn't move away from the end stop, making the film advance silky smooth.

The picture should show what is meant:

  2. I'd send it in to Don Goldberg or Youxin Ye for a CLA. I have used both of them. You will be amazed at how smooth your 1954 Leica IIf will be when you get it back.

Did that with my iif and agree it came back like I remembered Leicas should be...and good for another 50 years or so.
  4. Thanks for the comments and advice. Actually the camera is working perfectly. The only problem was the rewind lever being slightly out of position, causing the mechanism to bind as the advance was operated.
