KODAK DCS 420

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

I am a once upon a time IT techie dude has has probably forgotten

most of what I have learned.

Here is my issue: I can't figure out how to get the nikon n90 kodak

dcs 420 to connect to my PC win98.

I have adaptec 2910 adapter.......windows see's the adapter, but no

device hooked to it. I have used the dos disk to change config

settings to different options, nothing makes the PC automatically

find camera. Should the PC find the camera on its' own ? If it isn't

supposed to find on its' own, then where do I go from here. I have

been on Kodak website and there is so much firmware, files, software,

that I don't even know where to begin. Twain ?

??????

I am hoping someone is out there who knows these things backwards and

forwards who can maybe talk me thru what files and procedures I need

to do to get this thing to communicate with the PC. I have tried

various scsi id settings via the back of the camera including "PP"

& "PC" settings,.... all to know avail ??

I talked with a local techie shop who informed me that the adaptec

model I got is a poor model and sometimes doesn't even work. I don't

know if I have a termination issue, I have tried automatic

termination & enabled, none of these settings made the PC find the

camera.

My SCSI cable is 50 pin micro to 25 pin regular.

HELP !! ?? I know this camera is sweet, can't wait to use it

effectively.

Also the camera is set to monochrome pictures......From what I have

read in the manual, it looks like this setting needs to be changed

via software or firmware......but I also read stuff about "AQUIRE"

& "TWAIN"........BASICALLY YOU CAN SEE I AM SOOOO CONFUSED.

THANK YOU, I HAVE A LOT OF GREAT NON-MP3 LIVE MUSIC, IF THERE IS

SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO CAN ENLIGHTEN ME ON THIS CAMERA, I WOULD BE

HAPPY TO HOOK YOU UP WITH SOME SERIOUSLY GREAT MUSIC !!!...REALLY

I am not familiar with your particular SCSI card, but the first order of business is to see if the SCSI card is even seeing the camera as a device on the bus. Make sure the camera is on when you turn on the computer, and then as it is booting up, there will typically be a Adaptec BIOS that you can get into, and perform a SCSI bus scan to detect any devices that are there. Your adaptec should tell you that it sees some device, and it should return a name for the device that looks appropriate for the camera.

If the computer sees a device there, then at least the hardware is working right. But you will still need some kind of driver software so that the OS can access the device. You're on your own there.

If the computer can't see the camera at bootup, then you have a low level hardware problem. Bad cable, bad adapter or bad camera.

The other thing to realize is that SCSI is not generally used for any kind of "plug and play" applications, so the computer will usually only check for a new device at bootup, not afterwards.

Maybe there is some kind of Windows "plug and play" feature for SCSI, but I wouldn't know (not much of a Windows guy). I think it is going to be really hard to do anything with that camera unless you have the necessary drivers.
