I can't believe I didn't know about this forum until just now. But I

guess I haven't been very active Photo.net in the awhile. Anyway, I

don't really have a question. I just wanted to say Hello.

I really like using "alternative" cameras. I'll pick up anything that

can record an image and try to work with it. In fact I prefer doing

that.

my cellphone at the time, a Nokia 3650. This camera actually did

pretty well, for something that was only a third of a megapixel

(300,000 pixels). Here are a couple of images from it.

Last summer I participated in the world's first gallery showing

consisting exclusively mobile photos. Called MPPS (Mobile Phone Photo Show), it was

organized by Kurt Bigenho and held at the Rx Gallery here in San

Francisco. That was a lot of fun.

Just about the time I was finished with using the 3650 as a camera the

thing got stolen. Now I'm using a cheap Sony Ericsson flip phone. It

has a camera, but unlike the 3650 it has no way to get the pictures

out of the phone, except by emailing them to myself - and I'll be

damned if I'll pay Cingular for access to my own photos. So I don't

take pictures with it.

I'm waiting for the Sony Ericsson P990 ("Hermione") (or whatever it's

called) to come out early next year - a two megapixel camera and lots

of other stuff. In the meanwhile, I'm giving serious thought to

picking up a pinhole body cap for my Nikon D70. Now that should be

exciting.

PS. Almost forgot. If you're interested, I have more 3650 pics up here.

What inspired me to shoot with the 3650 (other than the fact that it had a camera) were those artists in Manhattan, in the 80's I think it was, who were making films with a Fisher-Price toy super-eight camera. I thought maybe it could become a trend, like the Diana. Unfortunately, though, the one-third megapixel cameraphone wasn't around long enough to inspire a photo cult, having already been superceded by one and two megapixel cellphones. Come to think of it, I guess the popularity growth of mobile phone photography is more like a tsunami than a cult. :)

There was a great exhibit at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego that exhibited a variety of cel phone photos -- perhaps today's counterpart to the Kodak Brownie? I don't see the information any longer at the MOPA site, but there is a mention of the exhibit here:

A more thorough web search will undoubtedly turn up more information on it. It was an interesting foil to the exhibit with the opposite extreme of pixel count on the other side of the museum at the time, featuring the following:

But, don't ask me. My watch tells time and my phone makes calls! Do let me know, however, if they ever make a Holgaphone!

Hey, Eugene. Been awhile, hasn't it? I've been fine and dandy. Moved to SF from Hawaii about a year ago - though it seems like only a third that time. Thanks for the link. I actually found that site last year, not long after it went up. For awhile it seemed like that guy and me were the only people in the world trying to put our cameraphones through their paces. Though I'm sure there were many more. There certainly are now. What have you been up to? Send me an email, if you like, and we can compare photo notes.

And Joe C., thanks for the link to the MOPA thing. I'll check it out. As far as a Holga phone goes, I think the 3650 (and phones like it) was/is it. I think they're pretty cheap now (like, free) - maybe you should pick one up.

Thanks, Yi Fay. That's a beautiful pic. No matter what you used. I don't usually like "frames" around photos, but that one actually makes a nice photo even better I think.

God, I cannot wait to get my SE P950 and get back to mobile phone photography. And this time with some real resolution. I'd thought about getting the SE K700, until I found out you can't turn off the shutter sound. Hope that's not the case with the P950. That'll be a deal killer.
