how do i shoot infrared photos of people at night in a location where the only

light sources are fluorescent street lamps. since fluoresent or sodiumvapor

lamps do not show on ir film - its really pitch infra red darkness. i plan to

put a ir filter on my on camera flash (so i dont get noticed) but none on the

lens (since there is no other light source to elimminate). will this work?

I'm guessing it would, shan. But I'm also guessing an IR filter won't make your flashgun's

flash invisible. The theory is that it would, but practice may prove that's decidedly

optimistic.

If you want to take pictures of people in the dark without them noticing I would try IR film,

period. No light sources. At all.

"It's been done before." Yep. Weegee did it with IR flashbulbs; I believe there's at least one (the audience in a cinema) done that way in _Naked City_.

Incidentally, I've found that some red lights outdoors - particularly the warning lights on antennas, tall buildings, and bridges, and some but not all stop lights - emit comparatively high amounts of infrared. Might be something to watch out for...
