jordan_w.
Hello all, My 72-year-old father has a new digital camera (Lumix FZ-50). I am in the process of helping him sort through several hundred photos from a recent vacation, but would love for him to be able to do so himself. He is not computer-literate, so he needs something exceptionally simple. What I would ideally want is a program that would fetch the images from his memory card for him, allow him to sort through them, do simple things like cropping, etc. and then burn selected images to CD, upload them to Flickr, or open them in Photoshop. (I plan on teaching him how to use PS Elements.) The application that comes with the camera, "Lumix Simple Viewer", is insufficient for this (it's good for getting pictures off the card, and that's about it). However, it could be used in combination with something else. The name of the game here is simple and free. Any ideas? Your advice is greatly appreciated. vincedistefano
Sounds like he's got a Windows computer? If you're open to trying a Mac, iPhoto shields just about everything pretty well from the user in terms of computer geek stuff. I've heard on the Windows side, Picassa is comparable - but now with Vista, there is some sort of new picture program to consider.
marc_rochkind
You want all these nice things, all of which would have to be created by somebody along with, I assume, support, and it has to be FREE? For all these benefits, you wouldn't pay anything? Nothing personal, and I agree there's some great free stuff out there, but there are also a lot of developers who have great stuff, too, but they need to make some money from it. (Disclosure: I'm one of them.) I would have so much preferred to hear you say "simple and available for an affordable price." Some of my favorite programs, sold by small firms or even individuals, are available for prices well under $100. For the ones I use every day, the price is very reasonable. Hope you find what you're looking for, nonetheless. --Marc
kuryan_thomas
As Vince stated, iPhoto for Mac. I don't use Windows, but I hear the Picasa viewer (from Google, I believe) is very good and free on Windows.
ole_hjalmar_kristensen
Picasa would seem to fit the bill. Free and powerful enough for what you are describing.
