bill koenig

I'm thinking about buying a new mat cutter. Right now, I'm looking at a Logan 650. Is this a good chose? It sells for about $400.
Any comments, opinions, or recommendations, are welcome.
William Kahn
I've been using the Logan 650 for about six years and like it a lot. It looks to be about $200 less now than when I bought mine. I'd say go for it.....
steve_swinehart
Depends upon how much time you want to take to cut each mat and how much money you want to spend. One of the best is the Speed-Mat by Esterly. The have fixed stops that you can setup, and they have models that attach to the wall so they don't take up much space. A lot of frame shops use them + they have a computerized version...

www.speedmat.com
bill koenig
This is just a hobby, volume will be low. I'm stepping up from a Logan 301 that was given to me years ago, I'm just now starting to use it, but I think its just plane wore out.
john_elder1
I have a 650 Logan and it paid for itself the first time a participated in a 2-man show where 2 of us matted 96 prints. It has worked solidly for a decade amd i will be using it again to mat 45 prints for a show this March. It has production stops and also has a straight edge cutter for cutting down mat board upt 32x40. Great machine!

Robin Smith

plane wore out.

How can you wear out a matte cutter? I have the 301 and have used it for years and it works just fine. The main reason to upgrade is to handle larger sheets (and keeping them square)and make setting the measurements quicker and easier. Also a more expensive cutter will indeed allow easier cutting down of matte board. On the negative side it will be bigger, so more of a pain to store.
Robin Smith
jtk
There's always the basic tried/true palm-sized Dexter or Logan cutter, used with a high quality (heavy aluminum, stainless edge, rubber base) straight edge. Use over a heal-able plastic cutting board, such as Xacto's.
They're not as allegedly fool-proof as the machines but they're way less expensive and way more capable... takeup zero space... those little cutters (and even mere box cutters) have been used forever by framers with basic skills (which ain't me...yet).

http://apps.webcreate.com/ecom/catalog/product_specific.cfm?ClientID=15&ProductID=21335
http://apps.webcreate.com/ecom/catalog/product_specific.cfm?ClientID=15&ProductID=18552
bill koenig
The main reason I upgraded to the Logan 650 is the sale price they had at this web site. $307.00. I'm not sure how long this sale price will last.
Framing4Yourself: Picture Framing Supplies and Equipment, Matboard, Frames and More
