If you think Gary's Lightsphere is expensive...

  1. If you like his Lightsphere, maybe you would like him to shoot your wedding: Gary Fong Wedding Fee, then again, maybe not. How about your kid: Gary Fong Children Photography Fee, it does include one 5x7. Rumor has it that he doesn't really want to do weddings anymore and hasn't shot any for quite some time.

Setting a day rate of $120K is one way of going about reducing your wedding bookings dramatically.

  3. Aren't these figures in Hong Kong dollars?

  4. Funny thing about America (The US)...<br>
People come from all over the world.<br>
Gary Fong is an American dude, living in America (The US).<br>
Instead of "Smith" his last name is "Fong"<br>
When Fong says "a buck" that means one US dollar.

  5. ummm- he shot a wedding I was at- maybe 3 years ago. The bride said she paid $7000 I think- which included only web proofing. The pictures were- ok, nothing special in the least (no editing at all). He was very nice though. He must have recently lost his mind charging that- or he never wants to shoot another wedding.

  6. If he books just one ... well ... there are people out there with millions and millions. So like
the lotto, you never know ; -)

  7. and hasn't shot any for quite some time.
For the price no wonder why.
OTOH if he books one or two a year he's still doing ok I guess... Whatever the market can bear.

  8. He is not a very good photographer in my opinion. He is definately one heck of a business man though!

  9. I'm thinking about asking if he would like to enter into a reciprocal agreement with me. I'd be happy to shoot any wedding he refers to me and I'm willing to pay him a 10% finder's fee.

What the heck, I'll go as high as 15%.

Oh, and of course he can cover for me too.

  10. "He is not a very good photographer in my opinion. He is definately one heck of a business man though!"

count mine as vote number 2 for that said

  11. This is a good thing. When the higher end of the market exceeds $20K, $50K, and now $100K, it brings up minimum pricing for the rest of us. In my area, the "middle market" is reaching $7K to 9K, with a few brave studios pushing $20K.

I like to think it's similar to real estate -- $1 million condos are being built next to $300K condos around me, so the value goes up for everyone.

    Or, maybe I'm completely wrong.

  12. Check out his "custom printing". It's just a bad dodging job in PS:

  13. I get exactly the same effect as a lightsphere by dumping a radio controled flash into a plastic milk jug with the top (bottom) cut off. Cost: $0

  14. I call it Milksphere, btw.

  15. Jamie, I give you an "A" for ingenuity with your Milkshpere. I'm sure its fine for shooting your family and friends.

In fairness to Gary Fong, the Lightsphere variants are marketed to professional event photographers. While equipment doesn't make the photographer, I wouldn't want to show up for a job with a milk bottle on my flash. It would be declasse.

  16. "I wouldn't want to show up for a job with a milk bottle on my flash."

With a Sharpie you can have "Lact0Digital" in the typeface of your choice on it just a few minutes. Answer any questions with "I'm sorry, but I've signed an NDA".

  17. Ummmm... yeah, I wouldn't pay 12,500 bucks for a picture of my kid when I can do it myself.

Interestingly enough those famous people he has photographed seam to have stopped in 2001 as their are no more barely heard of Hockey players weddings or the niece of someone famous listed in his Biography.

Maybe he's saving himself for someone who can appreciate his level of work.

  19. What's the price issue? Isn't that about what we're all charging?

    Russ

  20. I usually charge 10% less, just so that I can stay one step ahead of the competition. So, my prices start at $108k. HA!

It sounds like Gary Fong is the Tiger Shulman of Wedding photography - he may or may not be very good, but he gets them paying through the nose.

Wedding photography is assembly line photography anyway. If this dude can get away with charging an arm and a leg for the same assembly line bullshit we all do, then more power to him.

  21. Hey! My wedding photography isn't "assembly line bullshit"! It's just . . . bullshit. ;-)

  22. I'm gonna give notice at work and start charging more for the weddings im doing. Think i'll under cut "Alexander O" by 10% :)

  23. Gary Fong said he doesn't want to do weddings anymore so he decided that it would take 120,000 to get him out of the house on the weekend to shoot a wedding. I say more power to him! Especially if someone wants to pay that much!!

  24. I like the pic of Oliver, very cute. I think he will be a strong boy since he is lifting his head up at 3 weeks.
