lindsay_drake
Hi, I am looking for any individuals taking pictures with the Canon Rebel XTI, and what lenses they have...I am new to the digital SLR world and hopefully will be making a wise purchase, but I just haven't seen very many actual photographs...Any help would be greatful!Lindsay
yakim_peled1
A set of 50/1.8 (for indoor portraits) and 85/1.8 USM (for outdoor portraits) will be an excellent start. What is your budget? Happy shooting, Yakim.
lindsay_drake
I would really like to have a budget around $1000. I have found the camera body only for $400 (new, not refurbished) and would like to save the rest for a few lenses and flash. Wise choice? Thanks, Lindsay
yakim_peled1
400$ for a new XTi? That sounds like a possible scam. B&H sells it 710$ (new XT is going for 530$). Where are you going to buy it from? Is it a reliable store? Look at http://www.resellerratings.com/ Anyway, a set of 430EX + 50/1.8 + 85/1.8 USM will set you back at 650$ at B&H. It is an extremely competent set for portrait photography at a moderate cost. Happy shooting, Yakim.

yakim_peled1
http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Century21Electronics 0.73 out of 10 is definitely my definition of a scam. Run away! Happy shooting, Yakim.

mark u
You can find lots of photographs taken by the Rebel Xti at sites such as pbase.com that provide a search feature by camera or lens - and all they really reveal is how competent or otherwise the photographer was (even for those pictures that purport to be lens tests). However, if you want some useful guidance about lenses within your now reduced budget, it may help rather more to indicate what sort of subjects you intend to photograph. Bear in mind that some subjects really require lenses that are way outside your budget (e.g. floodlit field sports, birds in the wild, etc.). w.smith
Here's a whole review of the 400D/XTi - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ canoneos400d/ - inluding sample photos: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ canoneos400d/page30.asp. About that scam, Lindsay: if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
steve torelli
Lindsy, B&H has the Rebel xti, body only, for $709. Rebel xt, body only, for $534. Anybody selling much below these prices are running some kind of scam, as has already been pointed out. That will leave you room for a couple of lenses like Yakim has mentioned that will get you off to a very good start. Good luck.
steve torelli
Also, I have just noticed that Bob has posted something on his website today concerning the state of New Jersey taking some of these scammers to court for false advertising, among other things. Maybe NY will do the same and put some of the Brooklyn crooks out of business.

w.smith
There's a couple dozen of those scam cam operations in mid-town Manhattan too. Have been for decades, I might add!
lindsay_drake
I'll just have to work a few extra shifts to make-up the difference to go with BHphoto...no biggie! I don't want scammed and that is exactly what was going to happen! Thanks so much for all the helpful information! Lindsay
carlas
BuyDig.com (with 8.37 out of 10) has the XTi for $661 for the silver body. So far that's the best price/review combination I can find... Also, what's up with the cheaper color? Is it just because black has high demand?
