How to build photo website?

Recommended Posts

Hi!
I am a Swedish photographer who is new to posting my images online.
I am planing to create a homepage to showcase my work. I am an amateur photographer but I use to help friends and others with wedding photography.
I am not very good at HTML. I have googled this and found some services that seems good, like Wix and Portfoliobox. Does anyone have any experience of any of these kind of tools? Are they safe or is it better to use a web hotel?
Thank you // Erik Andersson

Not easy to answer. I have used a combination of Serif's Webplus and Jalbum to get some pictures on my website. This worked surprisingly well.
A friend of mine has done the same but when I viewed his site I noticed that he is using Simpleviewer (http://www.simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/) as well.
I'm a bit in the same boat; I'd use a simple website generator and link to more specialised photo sites for showing pictures.

The thinking here is going to depend on the long-term expectations you'll have for how the site will be used.

Is it a "brochure" site that you'll will occasionally update with a choice image or two to show off your best work? Or, is it a site that will routinely host busy galleries of images (say, regular updates from photo shoots, showing dozens or hundreds of event photos)? Will you be supporting password protection for some galleries, and not for others ... or allow people to leave comment threads, rankings or other interactive behavior? Want to be able to provide direct linking/sharing to individual photos or whole galleries through social media sites like Facebook? And: are you intending to sell images directly (as downloads or shipping prints)?

How you approach all of this - using simple static HTML from templates, vs. a more elaborate content management system or a third party service built just for this purpose - really does depend on how you intend to live with the site, and what sort of budget (in time, learning curve patience, and/or money) you've got in mind.

Not trying to make this sound too complicated, but right now you're in the phase where the decision you make is going to dictate what it's like to maintain the site going forward. Making a decision now that errs on the side of super-simplicity may, later, feel like you've sorely limited your flexibility. Making a choice that provides lots of flexibility now may make the process feel frustratingly complex while you learn the ropes.

Most people solve that second dilemma by throwing money at the problem, and hiring a developer to get you "moved in" to a site that can handle your future options, and then show you the ropes on using that platform to maintain the content. But if you're really looking for a very simple static web site, that's like hiring a professional plumber to help you hook up a new garden hose.

So: more about how you intend to USE the site, and you'll get some recommendations about which technology, service, and approach might be the best fit.
