How do you clean your Rolleiflex's focusing screen

  1. Mine is very dusty ... now I take it out already so your helpful
    answer is urgently needed :)

  2. Wipe the dust off gently but don't "clean" it -- the silver coating is very fragile.

  3. So...that's the only, isn't it? Can I wash it with water?

  4. For the screen remove it form the camera and run it under water and use a little dish soap between your fingers than blow dry .

  5. OCULUS New York

OCULUS New York Still shooting, but posting less here.

David is right, Donald was confused with prism. Water may spot it on the matte side, so blot smoothly and evenly.

  6. Think of it as just another lens, and after the water bath, finish with lens cleaning fluid and paper. GENTLY!

  7. Ooppss!! Yes, Oculus is correct -- I thought about screen and wrote about prism. I concur in whole with my learned colleagues.

  8. If it's a later screen and made of plastic, clean gently with soap, water and fingers and allow to air dry.

If it's made of glass, clean gently with soap, water and fingers and air either with cotton or plain white facial tissue. You can help it along with some compressed air.

  9. ... Since I didn't carefully proofread my answer, and the forum software doesn't allow editing:

If it's a later screen and made of plastic, clean gently with soap, water and fingers and allow to air dry. Some compressed air is OK to help it dry.

If it's made of glass, clean gently with soap, water and fingers and dry either with cotton or plain white facial tissue. You can help it along with some compressed air.

  10. I would rather take it to the next optician and have it ultrasonic-cleaned. Wrap it in a lint free cloth afterwards. If you wrap it in plastic foil make sure that there is no grease from fingertips etc on the plastic.

As mentioned by others, you can also try to wash it with dishwashing agent and let it dry in a dust free place, standing on one edge (with spacers under the edge), otherwise liquid will collect up on the lower edge and will cause stripes.

  11. How does the mirror look now that you have the screen out? Its a front surface mirror, so don't clean it without guidance if you don't know what you're doing. Cleaning/replacing the mirror on old TLRs often works wonders!
