hoods on polarizers, needed or not

As probably you all may know, Lee Filters introduced a round

polarizer filter mounted on a threaded ring which itself screws in to

another ring which is permantently mounted onto the filter holder

unit. What is different is that the hood, which would normally

attache to the filter holder, can no longer be used on that same

filter holder. Thus, with this polarizer, it is polarizer or no

hood. I realize that Lee has a square polarizer that allows to use

the hood. That presents other problems though for turning the

polarizer also turns the hood unless you have an intermediate filter

holder. However, I would never again buy another one of those square

polarizers; the glass is quite thin and very frail. You know the

rest. The round polarizer should be far more durable, but then there

is the issue of the hood. With a polarizer on the lens, can the hood

be dispensed with? According to Lee, the virtual answer is yes. Is

that OK? Have any of you shifted over to the round polarizer?

Thank you.

I've always found the utilization of a lens hood to be crucial to getting maximal tonal range. With or without a polarizer. Just cuts down on the stray light coming into the lens. While modern lens are well coated they are not perfect.

Lens hood should always be used. Always. Using a polariser in no way makes it less important to use a hood. On the contrary, an additional piece of glass in the front, most likely of lesser quality than the multicoated front element of your prime lens makes it even more important.
