jack_carlton
Today I've got my Holga (late birthday present). I had to grin likeFritz the Cat when I opened the package -- can't wait to waste myfirst roll of film... Hope it leaks.
sliu
How old are you? Don't you think a Holga is sort of cheap as a birthday present? Enjoy ;-)

sliu
Tip for Holga photography: don't believe any rules, try it our yourself. 1. Light leak is good; light leak is bad. 2. Thou shalt not use Tri-X; thou shalt use Tri-X. 3. Thou shalt not use slide film; thou shalt use slide film. 4. Thou shalt not shoot people; thou shalt shoot people. 5. Thou shalt not shoot flowers; thou shalt shoot flowers. 6. Thou shalt not shoot buildings; thou shalt shoot buildings. 7. Thou shalt not hand hold; thou shalt hand hold. 8. Thou shalt not click more than once; thou shalt click hundreds of times. 9. Thou shalt develope your own film; thou shalt spend more money on the lab than the camera. 10. Thou shalt not shoot Holga digitally; thou shalt shoot Holga digitally. ....
jbq
Be sure to remove the square mask entirely to maximize the light leak/flatness issues.
brian_c._miller
heh heh heh You've just been initiated into the Cult of the Holga. You're going to wander around photographing things for no reason. You're going try to get others to join, saying, "Come on, it's only a lousy $20! What can happen?"
kevin_dean
Hey Jaques, as a form of inspiration for you have a look at Perry Dilbecks work with the humble Holga...... http://www.photoeye.com/gallery/forms/index.cfm?image=1&id=36382&imagePosition=1&Door=2&Portfolio=Portfolio1&Gallery=2 http://www.southsideoxford.com/photographers/perry_dilbeck/ http://www.blueearth.org/bea/farmers.htm
Ian Taylor
When you take out the mask make sure to tape up the 2 holes.
jack_carlton
"Be sure to remove the square mask entirely to maximize the light leak/flatness issues." Oh, I didn't know that film flatness is an issue with Holga ;-) Clickclickdoubleclick.
lachaine
I guess you can get it to leak light if you remove the 645 mask and don't replace it with anything. My Holga doesn't leak one photon of light, which is the way I like it, but I have a 6x6 mask in it. The mask is really part of the film transport and lightmasking system. Personally, what I want are the effects from the lens, not light leaks. On mine, while the plastic is very cheap, everything is fitted together very well and tightly. jim h1664876971
Pull the 645 mask out and take a knife to it and cut it so the frame is 6x6, put it back. Tape over the film counter hole, insert 35 mm film and advance the film by counting the number of turns. You get nice panoramic 35 shots that expose the film around the sprockets and all. Cool for scanning! You will need a film changing bag or a dark closet to rewind the 35 film. Happy accidents!
jim h1664876971
I just noticed that the Holgas are right between the Hasselblads and the Horsemans on the medium format section at B&H photo. Rock on Holga!
randy_pegram
Nice, but when you really get serious about MF, suggest you take a look at the WOCA, about 20% more than a HOLGA but imho vastly superior optics.
