HLD-6 – OM-D Battery Grip

I have one, but after using it a few times, I pretty much don't any more.

It's shorter than most grips I have used before, like the grip for the E-5 DSLR. my hands are small and it's short enough the bottom of the palm of my right hand often hits the dial on the back of the grip and shift settings in error unless I keep it turned off, which isn't the best option if you really want to use those dials in a fluent fashion. Using the E-M5 with the lenses I use the most, the body only and dual top deck dials are best used/feel the best to me, without the grip.

I'm using it, and I like it, especially the grip on the side. If I could have purchased these separately, I might have gone with just the side grip. Nevertheless, the camera still feels small and light with the complete HLD-6, and I can hold the camera much better with my relatively large hands.

Stephen +1. The first, small grip stays permanently (except for battery changes) on the camera, and improves handling, especially grip (lots of outdoor stuff including rain/spray) and having aperture control on the front dial on the grip and exposure compensation on the dial on the back of the camera suits my hands and shooting style. I guess I'd only use the second part as a back-up battery compartment.

I have both; I was able to buy them separately too here in Oz. The right hand or small grip I leave on all the time, I really like using the shutter button from that grip. The second one, the actual battery grip adds quite a lot of weight, so I only put it on if the light conditions are such that I can still get away with hand hold or are using a tripod anyway. My hands shake very badly, even on a good day. Having the second grip is great for vertical shots though - adds extra ease of positioning and shutter button, and it is handy to be able to have a spare battery available if I need it. I have the OMD set to use the 2nd grip battery first though as it saves having to take all the grips off just to change the camera battery. You can set which battery to use by default, so if the battery grip is on, that's the default battery. Hope that makes sense?

Thanks for your comments - very much appreciated. I am going to give it a try and I just ordered it ($50 rebate currently available).

Hoo boy, don't get me started... :) Ok if you MUST know, this is actually the end result of a switch that Olympus pulled earlier this year. I used to be on Olympus' mailing list. In February (IIRC) I received an email from them offering the grip at $50 off, or $249 total. I passed on it as it was still above my max-willing-to-pay-price of $200. Then, like a month later, I got the rebate offer - now instead of them taking $50 off, I had to send in a rebate form to essentially get the $50 off they were doing last month.

No doubt the grip is nice to have; I just wonder why they can't just sell it for the $250 price they offered earlier this year instead of making folks jump through rebate hoops.
