paul_fields1
I've made film exposures at 1/40,000 but now I want to try the digital equivalent. Before I go to the trouble to attempt this, does anyone know if consumer grade cameras will capture and store an image illuminated by a 1/40,000 light pulse? Ed_Ingold
Probably any would work, if you provide the pulse and a means to syncronize it with the camera. An ordinary SB-800 goes down to about 1/80,000 seconds at minimum power.
mark u
"any" is an exaggeration. You'll either need a camera with a long exposure setting in a dark room, or one with a flash hotshoe, and there are other considerations too. You'll find good advice here: http://www.hiviz.com/tools/cameras/digital/digital.htm It's worth exploring the whole site.
jcuknz
'Any' is rather inclusive since you will need a digicam with shutter priority, so many digicams are excluded. Hotshoe is not essential once you learn the 'half-trigger' routine of letting the camera set itself up [not sure how one would do that in a dark room .. maybe take HT, switch off room lights, fire camera fire flash etc]
iambaxter
Check out this site. They show examples of high speed phote's taken with a Nikon D100. http://web.mit.edu/Edgerton/6.51s/2003/
jakob_norstedt_moberg
I took photos with my D70 and SB800 yesterday. By the motion blur I calculated the flash exposure time to be 12 microseconds, which is about 1/80000s. I set the camera at 1/500s, manual (with PB4 bellows) and SB800 as wireless remote triggered by the built-in D70 flash. I held the flash manually close to the subject. jakob_norstedt_moberg
When searching the net, I see that the EG&G microflash is used in experiments with high speed photography. It seems to be difficult to buy other than as surplus (in the US). Does anybody know of some commercially available (in Europe) flash that allows for microsecond exposures? Preferably less expensive than laser equipment for USD 15000 or more. Jakob
