andrew1
A few days ago my 17 year old Nikon FE2 quit on me in the middle of a shoot. The electronics died. I grabbed a back-up body and kept working. That night, I put new batteries in- no response. Now I'm worried. Today I brought it to Nippon Camera repair in New York City (where I live- they are know as one of the best Nikon repair places in the city) I told the guy behind the counter my story, and he told me it's now a paper-weight. Nikon stopped making parts available three years ago, and he wouldn't even touch it. So here's my question- does anyone know of a really good repair place that might still stock parts for and work on older cameras like me FE2? I know it's old and doesn't owe me anything, especailly after the years of abuse ( I bought it in high school, and now shoot as a pro- and still shoot it regularly) and the joy and income it has brought me- but it's a sentimental thing now. It was my first "real" camera, and has worked like a dog for me all this time- then quit so thoroughly and abruptly the other day. So can it be fixed, or should I let it rest? mskovacs
He wouldn't even look at it? Some camera repair shop...it might not be anything more than a simple fix, but it might also be DOA. Did you try to clean the battery contacts with a pencil eraser or a specialized terminal cleaner? (radioshack?)
introp
Like you, I love my FE2... while I've had me FT2 longer, it never got as much hard use.

What were the symptoms? You said "died"... Did the shutter stick open? Did the light meter stop working? Will the shutter still fire at the M250 or B settings? Will it fire at anything other than "A"? At "A"? Will it still wind?
rich815
17-years, wonderful service. Retire it, use it as a loving paperwieght, and just get another one. There's a couple of dozen of them on e-bay right now, and based on past completed items seem to be going for $200-275.
art_karr
Andrew: There may be someone who can repair them, but I haven't found them. It would be cheaper to buy a used FE2 [as noted] or an FM3A [which is a more advanced version and is a new camera]. Art
mskovacs
Sure: buy another 17 year old FE2 and have it die too... I wish I could recommend somebody specific in NYC, but do yourself a favour and find someone that will at least look at your FE2. You haven't described the exact symptoms, but it may not be as serious as you think. Yahoogroups has two useful resources for you: the Nikon MF group and the Nikon Repair Group. You may be able to find help and repair shop recommendations there. In your shoes, I would fix it only if it cost less than half of an equivalent one from KEH.com. Otherwise, build a shrine of honour for it, get yourself a new FM3A and enjoy the next 20 years :)

douglas k.
This place is the best for Nikons: http://authorizedphoto.com/default.asp If they can't fix it, then it is probably unfixable.
tom5
I've had two CLAs and a replacement back for an N70 done by Authorized Photo. The work is as clean as I've ever seen and they listen to what you request of them. I asked for recovering of worn "leather" on my FM2n and it looks perfect .. like new. My N70 back had a sticky coating - They replaced the back, moving all the hardware and even the plastic window. But, the fixed back looks like it came from the factory, even better, maybe! Send your camera to them .. they are fast and will give you an answer, I suspect, within a week or slightly more.
