michelle_kersten
I'm looking into making a website for my photography business and there are just so many options out there for hosing and site building. I want to find a host that isn't too expensive but provides a good FTP program and allows me to make changes to my website myself. Does anyone have any suggestions?
noreen
My hosting service is GoDaddy, which I find to be very reasonably priced, and for an FTP client (for uploading to the site) I've been using Cyberduck. I've been entirely satisfied with both.
bill_tuthill
If you sign up for 3 years, goDaddy is only $44.88 a year, which is less than my hosting service! FileZilla is the most popular FTP client on Windows (Cyberduck is Mac only).
michelle_kersten
I've heard a lot of people say to make sure that the host will allow you to make changes to your website yoursself. Does GoDaddy allow you to make your own changes? Do you have any suggestions as far as a site builder?
Mattman944
GoDaddy has plain "web hosting" where you create your pages and make changes yourself. They also have some web builder options that may be more restrictive.
michelle_kersten
I'm not too good with all this techey stuff. So if i just get the plain ol web hosting service would I have to build the site with code? Would I be able to purchase a premade template on the net and use it? Thanks so much guys for all your help!
Mattman944
Do you have a webpage editor? For a standard website, you don't need to code anymore, there are great graphical tools to help. I use Microsoft Expressions Web. I believe it has some templates included, although I have not used them.
sknowles
There are several types of Website hosts. Some have templates where you design your Website on their server with their tools and upload any images, files, etc. you want. They take care of the rest, meaning you have only the design and control they offer, and often require the inclusion of ads as part of the work. Some are where you use their Website design and production package and upload the suite of files, images, etc. to the host. Some are simply empty hosts where you do everything from your Website software, which can range from code (eg. BBEdit) to full wysiwyg (sometimes all in one package, eg. Dreamweaver).

Some hosts offer design services where they build it on their server from your images and files to fit your needs and interests, and you can work with them to keep it updated. They may or may not give you access to the actual pages or allow you have a copy on your computer to do your own work. You can also hire someone to build it and show you how to keep it updated whenever you want, but they will require a host which gives you full access and control to the Website server.

It's all up to you. I've done Web pages from code since 1994 and still do (and yes, my Website shows it), but I get to keep it simple and understandable as I work on it several days a week and upload Web pages, images and files through the FTP tool or app they recommend (not all ftp apps work with all hosts). I do this because I'm used to it, like it and have found many of the templates and wysiwyg packages add a lot of complex or unnecessary code for a variety of reasons. To see this, go to any Web page and use the "View Source" option.

Good luck.

daasebrephotos
Michelle, which one did you finally settled on?

What is your web address-if you have already built one? I am thinking about having my own website too.

Thanks
rainbowphotography
Depends on what photo business you want to have an online presentation. Here is one I use: a great dynamic presentation and you can change the content (both photo images and text) by yourself as long as you have a basic computer usage skill.
