craig rainbolt
I am wanting to know how some of you have set the light(s) to do a hatchet lighting portrait. Thanks...
bill c.
Craig-- There are numerous variations on the technique. Some use hard light, some use soft light. Some I've liked best used large arc lights with Fresnel lenses on movie sets. Try two soft boxes about 24" square set seven feet from the subject, head high and as far from the camera as the subject. Use the modeling lights for pre-visualization and move them in and out until you get what you're looking for. A good softer effect starts happening at about 4 to 5 feet from the subject. I've seen some really cool effects done with striplights, and one shooter even uses photo-balanced 48" bare flourescent tubes. Happy shooting. -BC-
