Hasselblad 100 Polaroid w/ 500c/m - problems?

Hi,

I'm spreading caustic paste across my keyboard as I type, so I'll try

to keep it brief.

Can anybody offer any advice of what I may be doing wrong. I am using

the Hasselblad 100 polaroid back on a 500c/m and am having constant

problems with each polaroid not pulling through without the leader

strip tearing off due to being soaked in paste. As far as I know I've

loaded the film correctly [types 664 and 690] and the rollers are

clean. Loading the packs with the black strip sticking through the

rollers. Removing the long black strip... sometimes the leader for the

first/ next poplaroid comes through, sometimes it doesn't [so I have

to open the back and fiddle around in low light. When it does, the

next one is usually so soaked it tears off. Is pack film actually

meant to be this messy? Surely not?

I haven't managed to locate any help pages or manuals [free/

downloadable or pay / booklets] online. If anyone knows where I could

look or is able to offer advice then I'd really appreciate it.

I'm sure I must be doing something obvious wrong.

Previous experience has been limited to Rolleiflex's so never had the

opportunity for polaroid "fun" before.

Hmm. that wasn't so short.. my keyboard's a mess.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Sounds like you may have an issue with defective film, the chemical pack should not be "popping" or "oozing" caustic paste all over while being pulled through the rollers..... I use Polaroid 669 and 665 film on a regular basis, albeit not on a Hassey back, but in a Daylab, a Bravo copier, or in a pack film camera.... it's all the same to me...... and I've never experienced this issue.

A call to Polaroid or the place where you bought your film may be in order..... in general a call to complain usually leads to a replacement pack of film.....

One pack of defective film is likely.... two..... hmmm.... maybe not.

It's hard to tell what you may be doing wrong without actually seeing how your doing it.

Going by what you said in your first post ( I may be reading it wrong) but the black strip that protects the film from exposure does not go through the rollers...... nor do the little leader tabs..... but pulling on those will cause the film to come through the rollers, at which point you will pull the film through swiftly, & straight.

Sometimes, the little white leader tabs will get stuck together and not pull out easily causing a big hassle, bit fanning them prior to closing the film case usually helps....

Now I'm not sure exactly what a polaroid back looks like for the Hasselblad, but I'm assuming it looks like another other, so if that is the case you may be loading it wrong.....

Thanks Michelle for such swift replies!

Yep, I now know that I was initially loading it wrong.. leader through the rollers etc, but still having a few problems. Might have a dodgy pack and another pack fogged by opening up the back to un-jam and clean things up. I'll keep trying and post back if I resolve it with a fresh pack.

Well... I was initially loading the pack film wrong.

For future reference and anyone searching the archives... do not thread the black strip through the rollers. The tabs for the following polaroids should not come through the rollers! Strangely my first attempt to load it like this actually worked but created a mess.. which I think may have been the cause of my later problems.

Also, a couple of useful links that after extensive searching I managed to uncover [PDFs]...

Thanks again Michelle for your help.

<< Loading the packs with the black strip sticking through the rollers. >>

The more people I find online that have done this, the better I feel. I went through 2 packs with my Holgaroid because I loaded it wrong, just like you did. :)

Glad you figured it out too. :)

Hi Goncalo,

Besides the instant 600 and time zero / sx70 films, all the pack film experience I've had so far is the 690 and the 664 [black + White 100iso] and despite the trials and tribulations you can see from the original post, they're working well.

Where to buy depends where you live? There is a new European site specialising in Polaroid cameras, film and accessories.

http://www.unsaleable.com/instant_photofun/

...but it may not be relevant depending where you're located.

 • 2 weeks later...

Hi I just got a 2nd hand back, the same as yours and I have the manual as well.

The manual says that it indeed must not have at first the black slip run through the rollers and none of the white ones either for that matter. The rollers are ONLY for the actual polaroid to run through to spread the chemicals around properly.

Anyway, the black slip and the white ones are supposed to be in that very small cavity above the springloaded door.

when loading the filmpack, make sure none of the white slips are stuck between the filmback and the filmpack, otherwise you'll have trouble.

anyway, when you've loaded all correctly, pull out the black protective cover, it is long, like 25-30 cm/10-12" long, and the the filmback is "armed" so to speak. there should be a white slip hanging out now with the number "1" on it.

The pull out the silver metal sheet thing and take your photo.

then pull the white "1" slip out...this will be just a strip of paper and then you'll see a black slip with white arrows on it again...

pull this out and the actual polaroid will come through the rollers and out of the springloaded door.

now just wait the time mentioned on the polaroid and then peel off the photo from one corner.

things should be fine now.
