handholding 50mm, f1.4 canon lens

I'm wondering if I would be successful handholding a 50mm, f1.4

canon lens (20D camera) at my son's 4th grade basketball game.

Normally, if I thought it would be an issue, I would bring my

monopod...however, I am an assistant coach on the team and thought

it might be less conspicuous without the monopod. I usually park

out on the end of the bench to take my pictures while the head coach

barks at the kids. As the question probably suggests, I am just

getting into photography...especially on the sports end of it.

Thanks!

Hi Steve,

It has been my experience that the longer the lens is the harder it will be to hand hold.. The 50mm should be just fine.

On another note, a suggestion would be to shoot everything RAW and evaluate your exposure & white balance to see what works best for you before pusing the ISO past 800 if you plan to print the images. If you are simply going to shoot for web, it isn't as critical.

Have fun shooting and post some examples, I would love to see them!

I regularly hand hold my 50 f/1.8 at 1/30th... I can even squeek out a 1/15th if I have something sturdy to lean against.. (this is on film though). If you shoot at 1/60th you should have no problem hand holding. You will, however, see some motion blur from the players... if you want to stop the action, you're going to need a higher shutter speed. Hand holding should not be an issue.

I shoot professional boxing with the 50/1.4. I have no problem handholding it, but this really comes down to your own ability to handhold. I don't have a choice on this, I'm not allowed to use a monopod or tripod, but it hasn't been a problem.

And push up the ISO until you get a speed you can handhold at, as grant suggests.
