Rob_L1664876404
I own an EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS which is only a few months old (used on a Digital Rebel and waiting for a 20D to arrive). I have never noticed any noise before - except the little "clunk" when the gyros are first activated. Yesterday when I used the lens, I heard a sustained noise the whole time the gyros were running. It' not terribly loud, but can be heard in a quiet room without putting your ear to the lens. The character of the sound reminds me of bearing noise in other contexts - only higher pitched (which I assume would be due to the very small size of the moving parts in the lens). This is not my only "L" series lens, but it is my only IS lens, so have nothing to compare this to. Has anyone experienced this and, if so, what was the long term outcome? Is it something to worry about? Does the lens need to go back to Canon before the warranty expires (even if the IS is still working)? Thanks in advance, Rob
erb_duchenne
If its not too difficult, go have it looked at. Otherwise just use it till it breaks. (Unless there's some important job coming up) Still under warranty, right? You sure it's not that you just didn't notice the sound before this? If it's loud, I'd definitely send it in. erik_wang
Rob, I own three copies of the 70-200IS, and all are very quiet and smooth, when the Image stabilizer is on, you only feel a sight 'vibration'. Otherwise is fast and quiet.
jayesh
Rob, my 70-200 IS is very silent. No noise at all when the gyros are running. You can hear a little whirring noise when I put my ear to the lens, but not otherwise. Have your lens checked. Good luck, Jayesh
steve_dunn2
I don't have this lens. I do have the 28-135 IS and 300/4 IS, and the IS system in both lenses is audible. I bought the 28-135 new, and it's been like that since day one; I bought the 300/4 used, so I don't know what it was like for the first several years of its life.

hiromu_kurosaki
I own, have owned several different IS lenses, 70-200, 100-400, 28-135, 75-300. Among those lenses, 70-200 makes the largest noise in my case. But the effect of IS is also the best...
