Gyro noise, 70-200 f/2.8L IS

I own an EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS which is only a few months old (used on

a Digital Rebel and waiting for a 20D to arrive). I have never

noticed any noise before - except the little "clunk" when the gyros

are first activated. Yesterday when I used the lens, I heard a

sustained noise the whole time the gyros were running. It' not

terribly loud, but can be heard in a quiet room without putting your

ear to the lens. The character of the sound reminds me of bearing

noise in other contexts - only higher pitched (which I assume would

be due to the very small size of the moving parts in the lens). This

is not my only "L" series lens, but it is my only IS lens, so have

nothing to compare this to.

Has anyone experienced this and, if so, what was the long term

outcome? Is it something to worry about? Does the lens need to go

back to Canon before the warranty expires (even if the IS is still

working)?

Thanks in advance,

Rob
