Ground glass focusing on 1941 rangefinders

I ran across this in the February, 1941, Minicam Photography.

but how did this work? Especially with the "bottom feeder" Leica? This is not one of the great mysteries of life, but I am still trying to wrap my brain around it.

BTW, $30 was a fair amount of money in 1941.
