rich_decristo
I live in West Orange, NJ and work in Manhattan. I just bought a Nikon D40 and would really like to take a small course to start familiarizing myself with the functions as well as learn how to take great pictures. I am still not quite understanding what to adjust and when. Does anyone know of any decent courses in the general NYC area?
teelions
<p>Rich,<br><br> One of the best schools in the country is just across the river in New York: International Center of Photography (<a href="http://www.icp.org/">http://www.icp.org/</a>). There are classes for beginners right up to advanced professionals. The courses are taught by instructors renowned for their art, expertise, and ability to teach others. I've taken dozens of classes there lasting from a single weekend to weeks in length. I suggest you look at their catalog. There is sure to be something at your level and interest. Good luck! </p><p> Terry Lyons<br> <a href="http://www.tlphoto.net">www.tlphoto.net</a></p>
ericgraham
NYIP is a correspondence course. I took the first two units. It is very helpful in learning all the basics such as aperture and shutter speed and how they affect your pictures. Material is somewhat outdated but as i said before, for the basics it was excellent.
keith_snell1
Hi Rich, There is a digital photography tutorial here: http://community.spiritofphotography.com/index.php?cat=15 that is designed to help old "film" photographers make the transition to digital. It covers most of the "basics" you will need to know to use your digital camera effectively. Don't hesitate to experiment and then ask questions on the forums. You will find that most photography forums are frequented by people that are more than willing to help others learn. And it helps to recognize that every time you ask a question, there are 100s of other people out there with the same or similar questions but are afraid to ask. Once your question and the resulting answer gets posted in the forums, everyone benefits. Keith http://community.spiritofphotography.com
