john_kasaian1
Good Morning! I'm curious about those round reflectors that are so popular. I've seen the results of the gold ones on color film--- makes the model appear healthy even after an evening of sucking down margueritas like theres no tomorrow. I'm curious about how such light would effect B+W film---would it improve the rendering of light colored skin---especially baby skin---too? Or would there be no advantage over the silver (less costly)reflectors? Thanks for any and all advise!
ellis_vener_photography
the gold reflectors are a bit less specular (the bounced light is not as hard) than the silver versions. Using one with B&W is like using a light to medium strength yellow filter that affects just the part of the scene the reflector is aimed at. don_wallace1
I use such reflectors when photographing people but not with baby skin. In my opinion, children and babies need nothing because their skin is so perfect. You just need to learn how to expose for it. Don Wallace
ralph_barker
I would disagree with Ellis regarding specularity. The gold reflectors I have are every bit as specular as the silver ones. The color is just different, and usually more complementary for adults, giving people that nicely tanned, pre-melanoma look. B&W film will simply translate that golden glow into a pleasant shade of gray. I wouldn't use gold for babies, however. There, I think a nice milky-white reflector is better. john_kasaian1
Thanks for all the responses! It sounds like the way to go would be white foam core for the babies and the gold for the sleep-deprived mamas! Thanks!
