Getting Logged Out Often

Discussion in ' Site Help' started by John Seaman, Mar 15, 2021.

  1. In the past I've been accustomed to (rather lazily) not bothering to log out from, even staying logged in for several days or more. But during the last few days I'm having to log on frequently, having apparently been automatically logged out after perhaps two hours. So, has something changed on photo. net? Or could it be something at my end?

I have not had that issue, but anything is possible. Anyone else sharing John's experience?
  3. I haven't noticed anything different. Have you changed settings?
  4. I haven't changed anything. And it happens when I'm using different PC's, one running Windows 7, the other Windows 10, both with Firefox.

Strange - let's see what other responses might come in.

  6. I stay logged in on my Windows desktop pretty much indefinitely. On the ipad, however, I get thrown off regularly. Sometimes after several hours, sometimes it only takes some tens of minutes; I can't seem to recognize any pattern on the timings.

  7. I think the site logs me out once a week or so. I also have to log in when I clean up the computer and trash all the malware and cookies.

  8. Never happened to me on iPhone or iPad.

It’s probably a coincidence but John, Dieter and Conrad have Show online status enabled whereas Sandy, Sanford and myself don’t.

  9. Hmm. It hasn't logged me out today. Fingers crossed.
  10. Turned online status off - still got logged out on the ipad.
  11. Apparently the reason I got logged off on the ipad was me using the incognito/private browser tabs of google chrome. Switching to the standard browser tab has me stayed logged on so far.

  12. I avoid cookies as much as I can, but I have all cookies I can, purged on shut-down. I restart every day first thing on my desktop, but I do sometimes leave my laptops logged in, but asleep. Those, I try to restart every other day or so.

It's the cookies that 'preserve' your log-in info, isn't it?
  13. Most sites will log you out if you remove their cookies.
But there are other reasons for getting thrown off a site - many sites (think banks, for example) just use a timer and throw you out after a few minutes or so. Not sure whether or not that requires the setting of cookies though. I just cleaned out all my cookies (with the exception, of course, of those I choose to permanently keep) - and upon opening my browser again, has set a total of 17 cookies. Some are set to expire when the browsing session ends, others stay for day, weeks, months, or even years.
  14. Cookies are a pain in the fundament.
