General Expired Question Forum?

Recommended Posts

The earliest-dated question for which answers appear as listed on

this forum is "Photokina - Olydak for real?" with an August 9 date.

I know what Photokina is but was curious about Olydak - an obscure

1930's Leica accessory, or a to my ear a possibly Inuit contribution

to phototechnology? But when I clicked on the question I was advised

that either I was not logged in to Photo.Net (clearly inaccurate) or

was not authorized to access the General Expired Questions Forum,

which I had never heard of before and which suggests that expired

questions are actually archived but only accessible to some subset of

Photo.Net members. A search of Photo.Net for "Olydak" yielded no

results. What gives?

This forum exists because we sometimes get requests to archive threads that have already been deleted from the Unarchived forum. Also sometimes people complain that their thread was expired too fast.

So threads are not outright deleted from the Unarchived Forum. They go into this Expired forum for a while. It isn't supposed to be visible.

Ashley, because some people take us at our word that the threads in the forum won't be archived. For every person who is upset that their post in this forum isn't archived, there is somebody who will be upset if we archive his post. We've had cases where people asked us to archive threads, and we did, only to receive complaints from other contributors to the thread who thought that their posts were going to be deleted in 48 hours.

(We really can't win.)

Probably more work to program than it's worth, but how about a "no archive" check box? Kinda like X-No Archive on usenet (from memory; not sure if that's exactly right) Then you would be free to archive whatever you wanted. Of course, it has the same problem as usnet when someone quotes a post, but that's just tough. :)
