james_kennedy9
Galen Rowell had an untimely death due to a light aircraft accident. I have several of his books and not only are they filled with memoral photos, but also very comprehensive discriptions on his techbiques with flash, especially fill flash. Thom Hogan was a student of Galens and described how he switched from Minolta to Nikon after joining one of Galen's safaris, not that there is anything wrong with Minolta. Even if I were 50 years older, I don't think I would enjoy Galen's habit of taking photos while hanging to a vertical mountain wall, but I like his photos while doing so. Here is a link describing what could be found in his camera bag, with a strong emphasis on Nikon.

http://www.mountainlight.com/rowell/gr_camera_bag.html

Speaking of Thom Hogan, if you visit his site, he has an interesting article on what he would choose if limited to one camera for the rest of his life.
starvy
The images are astoundingly saturated. Did he use Kodachrome or Velvia or perhaps some saturated negative film?
waltflanagan
He used a lot of Velvia, polarizers, and his own graduated neutral density filters. As James said his books often go into a lot of detail on the equipment including film type that he used for a particular shot.
Andy Collins
Absolutely one of my favorite photographers, alongside my dad:) I forgot that he used the F100. His book "Vision" is one of my favorite books, and one that I read while traveling through Indonesia back in '95.

steve_levine
I could have sworn he used a Nikkormat and an FM2? Or maybe he started with these? The man certainly had a great eye, and wonderful technique.
tmp
Nope, he started with an Instamatic. Seriously.
photo5
I worked on some of Galen's scans while I was at Corbis. They were wonderful images. I enjoyed his "Galen Rowell's Vision" book very much, though I no longer have it. I found a used copy of his Mountain Light book a few years back and it will remain in my library.
