Read the reviews on Amazon if there are any.
The most important thing is to just switch the camera to video and start shooting and editing. I've read or seen interviews with many film directors and they all say that. Learn the whole process end to end- pre-production, production, post production. Learn to do it fast.
After a video capable camera, the next piece of major equipment is some kind of field recorder like a Tascam DR-07, which I have and like, or the Zoom H4.
Search Youtube for my latest effort, "Folsom Street Fair 2010." Shot on Sunday, edited and uploaded on Monday night. More than 100 hits so far. Sound + 250 stills. Although I shoot actual video, I think this is a good approach for a lot of events.
