martin_czermak
A local dealer told me that when i use a Bosscreen an additional fresnel is not needed. He assured further, that the tech's at Linhof says the same. I dont know why, but my feeling says that this is only a rumour. Who is right, who is wrong? Many thanks for your help! bob_salomon
You will not need a fresnel in addition to an enhanced gg system regardless of manufacturer. However with the Boss system you MUST use one made specifically for Linhof since the image is not formed on the front of the screen but in the middle on the wax layer. jnorman2
i hate to disagree with bill, as he is so generally correct, but i have found that even with a bosscreen (which i returned due to bubbles in the cement between the two elements) and with a beattie intenscreen, i still have benefitted greatly from the addition of a fresnel screen for corner brightness, viewing, and focusing. YMMV. jnorman sunridge studios salem, oregon

brian_ellis3
I've used a BosScreen on every large format camera I've owned including my present 8x10 Deardorff, I've never used a Fresnel with any of them and in fact had never even heard of combining the two until someone here recently mentioned that Calumet sells that combination. I thought they were wrong. Turns out I was wrong, Calumet does sell that combination for about $250 so you can use them together but it isn't necessary to do so in order to benefit from the BosScreen IMHO. al_seyle3
You didn't say what lens and format. I've been using a Bosscreen with lenses from 300 down to 110 on 4x5 sucessfully with no fresnel. I recently added a 58 and found the light fall-off to be too great, so I had Bill Maxwell make a screen/fresnel combo which, while not quite as bright as the Boss, works well for all lenses.
