Fomapan 120 versus APX 100 and Verichrome Pan

Recommended Posts

I have tested Fomapan 100 with a few developers and saw no real big differences between it and APX100. At least with 6x6 and 6x7, it looks more or less the same. However, the price differs only about 5 Cent per roll, so I stay with the tried and true APX. I have no experience with Verichrome Pan.

The same as in "after finding the development times for the same CI for both films, I made test shots with both (using two magazines of my SL66), comparing the results and had problems to see any difference at 5x enlargements (30x30cm)". I used R. Suzuki's DS-12, a high acutance developer (look here).

FWIW, after studying thousands of images on Flickr, I have to give the nod to Rollie Superpan 200 as being the closest contemporary film to our beloved and mourned Verichrome.

Everything else is just too “snappy”, and generally lacks that long tonal range VP had. The next closest might be Tri-X in Pyro, but I know staining developers aren’t to everyone’s taste.

On the other hand, an un-Godly number of b/w images on Flickr are developed with Rodinol (aka R09), the reason for which is beyond my ken. It has nice tonality, but an overwhelming acutance that makes RPX 25 look like Tri-X in D-76! Gah. Seems if one wanted the convenience of a liquid, HC-110 can easily be had, or F-76, with only a little trouble.
