sanjay1
I am a beginner in photography and I recently bought an eos 20dcamera. What I noticed is that in auto mode the flash flickersmultiple times before a picture is taken. Is it an issue with mycamera or is just a normal behavior? Thanks in advance. shambrick007
What does the manual say?
mark_chappell
It's normal in ETTL to fire a low-intensity 'pre-flash' before the main flash. It's annoying -- the pre-flash makes a lot of birds (my main subjects) blink and the time lag of 1/16 sec or so is enough to yield a disproportionate number of pictures of birds with closed eyes. Or it can make them flinch, giving a blurred image.

michaelging
You can control this in custom functions
sanjay1
I checked the manual but could not find any convincing reason why it does. But does it have to flash several times before a final picture? Has someone else seen this too? Sanjay
mark u
Try reading pages 68,142 and 94 of your manual. Note that custom functions do not operate in Auto mode.

touchinglightphotography
I believe that is actually the "red-eye reduction" mode, with the multiple preflashes to close the retina of the subject prior to the photo. There is also a single pre-flash that occurs normally for TTL metering before the shot is fired. Shut off red-eye reduction (though I don't own a 20D, I believe is is a custom function or menu item) and see if that resolves the problem. suman
Thats normal Sanjay, It is some weired implementation of autofocus assist light in 20D.
jani_k
That is normal Sanjay, It is autofocus light that is used to get correct focus. But when you start to use non auto modes (P, Av, Tv and M) you get to choose whether flash is used or not! Have fun with your new 20d, try out those non auto modes! paul hart
Sanjay Count yourself fortunate - I've got a 5D and can't even get the flash to pop up.
