Ricochetrider
I accidentally fingerprinted a negative. Any way to remove the fingerprint or clean the negative? Or is it toast? Thanks. Tom
Tony Parsons
Is it on the emulsion side ?
ben_hutcherson
Pec pad with either Pec cleaning solution or Kodak film cleaner. I've also used Kimwipes with either of these, but prefer Kodak film cleaner. Whatever you do, do it gently.
Gary Naka
And clean it as soon as you can. I've had mixed results trying to clean off old dried fingerprints. Some times you can dissolve it off, other times once the finger oils evaporate, the stuff that is left behind is really hard to get off.
Ricochetrider
Thanks guys. Do people use gloves of some sort to handle negatives?
Jean-Claude
I use my breat close to the negative and sip them away using a anti static cloth. You may also buy coton gloves, usually white though. They are supposed to be used when manipulating prints.

And BTW, you really don't want the skin oils to get INTO the emulsion. That would become permanent.
Gary Naka
Thanks guys. Do people use gloves of some sort to handle negatives? Cotton gloves. But generally I just wash my hands (oils/chemicals/etc.) and am careful to handle by the edges.
ben_hutcherson
I use to use cotton darkroom gloves, but found that they shed way too much lint and left my film too dirty. I've resorted to handling carefully by the edges, or nitrile gloves if I must. Incidentally, this is one BIG reason why I like mounted slides... Uhooru
Some use gloves, but always good not to touch the negative on the front or back, just pick up by the sides.
JDMvW
Another good cleaner is Edwal Film Cleaner (e.g., LINK) It's moderately expensive, but it lasts forever.
