bobbollinger
I just received a beautiful copy of this lens from KEH, without papers, and was somewhat surprised to see what appears to be filter threads on the front sunshade/filter ring area. Is it possible to use a filter on this lens?
I searched PN and looked at the Pentax and Adorama websites but could not find a definitive answer. The closest I came was the Adorama website, where it indicates "n/a" in the filter size specification.
CharlesBecker-Toronto
Bob-I believe that the threads are meant for a lens shade and not for filters (due to the curvature of the front element). cb

pj_vesterback
The lens shade is built in. I think the "threads" that you see are just for aesthetics.
wayne_campbell
I own the Pentax 17-28mm which is the grandfather of the 10-17. It also has, according to specs, "no filter threads." But nonetheless I was able to screw a 49mm UV lens in just for protection. It comes perilously close to the lens's front element but does clear it. Downside is it's not a perfect seal in that the built-in lens hood is scalloped so there are small gaps all around. But, it does offer 90% protection which is pretty good.
