victor_ho2
I flew in over Portland, Maine on Friday. It was a bumpy ride and flights allover the northeast had been canceled 24 hours earlier for bad weather. In thepouring rain as we made the approach to the runway, the countryside had changedabruptly from one week ago. There is still a lot of green. But, there are alsomany many stands of trees at peak color. I drove the back roads in central Maine on Saturday. I was headed in thedirection of Fryeburg and the White Mountains. There were more than adequatephoto opportunities. I'm still seeking a real moose sighting. I came across acranberry bog and even picked a bucket of berries. The polarizing filter reallypopped the sky and the color on the trees. There are still lots of green treesaround so that next weekend should still be great. The highlights were finding a stand of birches beside the road with sidelighting from the late afternoon sun and also finding a lake with near perfectmirror calmness and fluffy white clouds right at sunset. charles_stobbs3
The TV stations show color near Fryeburg should be at peak. If you go back to Portland and have a couple of hours the mail ferry trip around the islands of Casco Bay is very scenic or a trip To Peaks Island (the closest to Portland) and an hour or two walk around the island is also nice. And the waterfront of Portland and its eastern and western promenades are scenic on good days.
victor_ho2
Thanks Charles. Portland and the coast are on my list of places to visit again. I haven't been to the islands by ferry yet.
david_henderson
I'm in Bar Harbour now. Plenty of good colour in south central Maine right now- but a mixed picture with some areas still green and others with serious leaf-fall. Cadillac Mountain tonight was I felt disappointingly pre-peak and the picture is better at sea-level. I left N Hampshire Friday, and felt that I'd seen the best in many of the White Mountains locations by then.
victor_ho2
Down by the water and on lakes as well the temperature is more moderate at night. The leaves will change later. Last night it was supposed to be below 40 in the central and west of the state. New Hampshire and the White Mountains are inland and appear to be farther along in color. Thanks for the info. I may try for the coast next weekend.
