Niels - NHSN
Anyone has experience with RAW Power? I generally just shoot jpeg, but have a task where it makes sense to shoot RAW. I am hoping the learning curve isn't too steep and it doesn't missing something generally considered essential. I am attracted to the Photos integration on Mac and batch job capabilities - and the price seems fair. Any happy or unhappy users on photo.net? Niels - NHSN
NHSN, not sure if you’ve read this review. It’s fairly balanced. Raw Power 3.0 — Thomas Fitzgerald Photography Thanks Ludmilla. I haven’t - I will give it a look. Thanks Niels
igord
I think the best solution is to shoot RAW and use a raw editor that comes with your camera. Excellent results straight away, no waisting time on tweaking things.
paddler4
Which raw processor is best depends on what you want to accomplish with it. I haven't used Raw Power--I don't use a Mac--but I looked at the user manual. My impression is that its strength is integration with the Apple ecosystem. Its weakness appears to be that it has relatively rudimentary editing controls compared to those in software like Lightroom. To pick just one example, it seems that Raw Power's sharpening tools are just two sliders that control the amount of sharpening. In contrast, Lightoom allows you to control the amount, the radius of sharpening, and masking. It now also has a "detail" slider that changes gradually between two types of sharpening (unsharp mask and deconvolution). All of these can have a large effect on the final image. Re igord's point: IMHO, this too depends on your use. I shoot mostly Canon cameras, and Canon's free raw processor is considered to be very good in terms of the quality of its image rendering. However, for my purposes, Lightroom is superior because of its more extensive editing tools, its almost seamless integration with Photoshop, and the availabilitly of a large number of plugins, a few of which I use nearly all the time. For some other people, Canon's software is a better choice.
JDMvW
I shoot RAW (it's like a negative in film) and a small jpg for quick and dirty use. I use the Adobe Camera Raw that I have. Never saw any important need to go beyond that.
Niels - NHSN
Thanks all - so far. My needs are basic and it is possible that the new Nikon NX Studio (I just got a z6ii) will be all I need. My previous experience with camera manufacturers SW has been mixed, mostly negative. I have very little patience for post-processing - but may need to a little more tweaking this time, so I’d need something without a too steep learning curve. andylynn
NX Studio is quite good. Also, Google Capture One Free Nikon. It’s just as good but the interface is different - you might prefer one or the other.
igord
NX Studio is actually a great software. I use it occasionally when I shoot rented Nikon cameras in a studio. So is Canon DPP for Canon users.
g_richards
Don't know about RAW Power software as it won't run on High Sierra from my understanding. I don know that Apple Photos software is about useless for me processing raw image. Does fine with jpegs but raw it is slow and freezes up quite a bit. So right now am using Darktable for raw processing. Am looking closely at Exposure x6 for a possible work flow.
