Exhibition Announcements

I recently attended the opening of a superb wildlife photographic exhibition at the Houston Museum of Natural

Science. I understand that this exhibition is on simultaneous display at a number of locations around the world (it is

sponsored by several British institutions). As with Shun Cheung's recent post about an ESPN TV show, this

information, which may be valuable to many wildlife photographers, is difficult to frame as a question. So I have two

questions: is there a place for us to spread the word about significant exhibitions, TV shows, etc. without feeling guilty

about not asking a question? Also, am I being overly sensitive to a critic of Shun's post by not mentioning the

exhibition sponsors by name?

It's fine to post here. Go ahead and mention the sponsors. Is it the BBC/British Gas exhibition? Any idea if it's due to be shown anywhere else in the US?

 

I guess forum policy (as of now) is it's OK to make announcements of exhibits of significant interest to nature photographers, as long as nobody uses this forum for advertising or commercial purposes. Such posts will probably be deleted.

 

Announcements of personal exhibits (real life, not web pages!) will be taken on a case by case basis. Consideration will be given to those who contribute in other ways to the forum over those simply using it as a way to "advertise"!

Thanks, Bob for your consideration. Yes, it is the British Gas sponsored exhibition and the photographs are excellent. The entire exhibit consists of transparencies (up to 3 feet by 5 feet in size!) with backlighting. After about half an hour my eyes (which are not that well-preserved) began to suffer, and I think prints with good lighting might be a better presentation. However, a great exhibition which I hope has many similar venues around the globe.

I'll take this opportunity to announce the exhibition at my gallery, the Dancing Trail Gallery in Franklin, NC, this Saturday & Sunday and next Saturday and Sunday. It is a small, one-room gallery, and it is our second exhibition. My purpose is to provide opportunity for local photographic artists to exhibit nature photographs. Last Sept we had our first exhibition with 7 artists presenting and 62 people viewed the pictures. Not good enough to get much boost from big companies, but I would love to see more of these mini-galleries spread across the country! It gives opportunity for teaching, comparing, motivating and encouraging nature photographers plus the opportunity to see what works as far as exhibition requirements (matting, framing, advertising, etc.). Paul, yes I think you are being overly sensitive to the (IMO totally unfounded) criticism I received on the ESPN TV show thread. In this forum, inevidably, we need to mention names such as Canon, Nikon, Kodak as well as John Shaw, Art Wolfe ... farely frequently. I simply don't see how we can have meaningful discussions on nature photography without mentioning those names and their products on a regular basis.

 

What is still missing in this thread is the time and locations for the British Gas-sponsored exhibition though.

To those who can not attend any of the exhibitions of the British Gaz pictures :

traditionally, those pictures ( or at least some ) are shown in the BBC Wildlife magazine.

The pictures come from a contest that is been held each year and is open to all photogs.

I don't know whether this magazine is available in the US; it is available thru subscribtion.

The same magazine - which obviouly deals with all sorts of issues on nature in general - also commercialise books that have the pictures of each contest per year. Highly recommended. Each time I see the pics I know why I haven't given up my daytime job ...

And finally, the BBC television has regularly great TV series on wildlife, that can easily match my favorite Nat Geographic.

from the co-organizer, Natural History Museum London. Only one US venue is mentioned, New York City. As it is currently showing in Houston I am sure it is also being presented in many other places not shown on the page noted above. Herman's comments are right on - this exhibition is a humbling experience!
