colin carron Posted November 13, 2019 Share Posted November 13, 2019 (edited) Orkney croft. There were several reasons why Scots rural population fell in 18th and 19th centuries. One was The Clearances. But famines, marginal land and the pull of higher wages in the rapidly growing cities all played a part and de-population has continued after the 1886 Crofters Act. Getting young people to settle in Scottish Highlands & Islands remains a problem today and one can see why.
