seth_n
Dear all I have a LTM elmar that look like the one in the attached picture and would like to research further about this lens. However, I unable to locate the serial number. Where should I look for the number?
kelly_flanigan1
Some 5cm Elmars have no serial numbers.
lacey_smith4
it is hard to see in some lenses (and I am not sure in same location on all). but, most are on the diaphragm adjusting ring. Mine is exactly opposite the indicator protrusion, in the black plastic itself. It is not easy to see, until you know it is there. I understand some of the common repairs over the years would have had the original ring replaced, and the replacement would not have a serial number. In that case, you may bracket the age your lens by whether it is coated, whether it has new/old style f-stop progression, etc.
seth_n
Thank you for the quick answers. This is how the lens look like (uncoat, scale in feet)<div></div>
diego_k.
The elmars that dont have SN are usually coming from Leicas A that where sent to factory for upgrade to Leica II or such, that included a screw bayonet for other lenses, so the Elmars were taken of the body and mounted on nickels barrels (usually). Lenses in cameras sent in after WW2 used to be mounted on Chrome contemporary barrels. There is no SN since the Serial Number was on the camera itself. melvin_bressler
Seth: The SN on my elmar is on the black rim just inside the housing, opposite the words "50 mm" on your lens. It is engraved and very difficult to find or to read. I needed a light and magnifying glass.
kelly_flanigan1
Then there are the dreaded Russian Industar-22's and 50's; that are modified to pass as Elmars! :)
