koval
Iam looking for a good lens for head shots and Iam not sure which of them to buy. I was wondering if 70-200 F4 L will give me enought blur in the backgrounds or I should go for 135 f2.8.What is you opinion ?Thanks
PuppyDigs
I own both lenses and both are excellent for their intended purposes. For general purpose shooting the zoom is the better choice. However, if your main use will be head shots, get the EF 135 2.8 SF: the extra stop makes a big difference in background blur, it is sharper at 135 than the zoom, the dial-in soft focus is a plus when you need it, it costs half as much as the zoom and it is smaller more nimble to use. I wrote a review of the EF 135 2.8 SF at
http://alaike.lcc.hawaii.edu/frary/toolbox6.htm
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
d_cerame
The 70-200 is to much for head shots...all you need is a 28-105 or 28-135 IS would be good...beyond 135 you are tempted to zoom in more and flatten out the face of the model more and more. I found this to be a problem with the 28-200 I used to own, not fast enough and too much zoom kills the 3rd dimension.
lee_shively
The 70-200 would be a better overall lens choice but, if you're interest is mainly in mugshots, the 135SF would be preferable.
