Does the Black Leica MP come in two different leathers?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if I recall correctly, so I thought I'd ask...

Does the black painted Leica MP come in two different types of leathers?

I've seen one with a grainy/bumpy type leather thats a bit more glossy than the other one. Here's a link to a picture on a Japanese website:

This other one is very fine grained and very matte/dull... it looks kind of like black colored sand paper. An example of it is found if you search for the black MP on bhphotovideo.com. here is the link:

No - as Rick points out, not unless you order through the a-la-carte program (then there are several options). The standard body covering has always reminded me of the black non-slip strip in my bath tub.

The standard MP comes with a particularly slippery leatherette (not leather) covering that is just really awful. Many users replace it with a Griptac cover from cameraleather in Vermont (no connection). Griptac is a 3M material that was initially used as a non-stick handle for golf clubs. It is a bit industrial looking but it works extremely well.

If you click on "Show Continue" (in small print near the bottom) you can see the Aki-ashi ordered leather replacement.

This gentleman's blog article is about how he installed the leather himself. I've used Aki-ashi leathers on three polaroid SX-70s and one Olympus OM-1. Great quality and very easy to apply.

Other limited edition MPs -- the LHSA ones, the anthracite one for the Japanese market, to name just two -- have been done

with traditional vulcanite coverings, though.

Anthracite:

LHSA grey hammertone:

Oh, and the Leica MP Classic Kit:
