Does minolta x-700 work without battery?

As others have said, the shutter of the X-700 is fully electronic, and without batteries it does not function at all.

Minolta introduced electronic shutters two camera generations prior to the X-700, but in both of these camera series B was a mechanical speed, plus both had a mechanical backup speed of 1/90s in the XE series, and 1/100s in the XD series. These backup speeds are the same as the flash sync speed.

Of course the flash sync speed is 1/60s in the X-700, which is probably why you assumed that this might be a mechanical speed in the X-700, but unfortunately this is not so. Even B is an electronic, ie battery consuming, speed in the X-700, which makes it less suitable for astro photography.

Hi Steve,

You have brought to my attention the fact that the Rokkor Files links to the Minolta USA pdf's appear to be flawed in that they are only accessible from inside the Minolta site. If you try the cox.net link you should be OK. I will amend the Rokkor Files tonight to remove the Minolta USA links and arrange an alternative host for the pdf's.

Regarding the X-700, yes it does need batteries, but it will run on readily available alkaline LR44's as well as SR44's - these batteries are relatively cheap, so simply buy an extra set and leave them in your battery holder on the camera strap and you will be fine.

Best regards,

Antony
