rick_waldroup3
I am fairly new to DSLR photography. I own a D2H and a D1X and it is now time to clean the sensors. I purchased the D2H new and it really has only one spot, but it is a large one. The D1X I purchased new and it definately needs to be cleaned. Do I really need the AC adapter cord to clean the sensors- is there another way to do it and any tips at all on cleaning the sensors would be much appreciated- I have never tried anything like this before. Thanks in advance, Rick.
rick_waldroup3
I meant to say that I purchased the D1X used and there are several spots on the sensor. Thanks, Rick.
Ed_Ingold
An AC adapter is necessary in order to use the CSM utility intended for that purpose. It is far safer than holding the shutter open in BULB mode, and the sensor remains inactive throughout the process. There are many threads on this subject in Photo.Net, and you can peruse http://www.copperhill.com for instructions and supplies.
giles_king_salter
Is there any reason not to just use a 30s normal exposure? I don't know of any reason why having the sensor on should make a difference as opposed to using the mirror-up cleaning setting. 30s is plenty of time to clean the sensor, although if you haven't done it before then you might need a bit longer to get the hang of it. Rick Waller
"I don't know of any reason why having the sensor on should make a difference " According to the prevailing wisdom, having the sensor on means it is charged and will actually attract dust and/or hold onto the junk on the sensor making it more difficult to clean. Cleaning it with the sensor not charged supposedly makes the task easier. Myth or fact? Have no idea.
wilfred_wong
i set to bulk when i clean the sensor or D100. it works, but you better be quick when doing the cleaning.
franklin_polk
I've also used bulb to clean a D1's sensor. Works fine. IMHO, needing an AC adapter to clean a sensor was one of the sillist things Nikon's ever done.
jaymace
I have not been able to purchase an AC adapter for a D2x since I bought the camera in December! This make cleaning with the shutter open the only solution (which I have not had the guts to attempt) except for spending $80 for a service call. Any experience out there with using bulb on a D2X for cleaning? Thanks.
