mcarter
use a tripod fast shutter speeds will stop action for a neat effect slower shutter speeds (1/30 or so) along w/ following the subject (if you're using a pan/tilt head) will also do neat things. Don't use the on-camera flash if you can help it. Have fun!
beeman458
A fast lense like an 85/1.8 or a 135/2.0 and high ISO as you want your shutter speed to be up around 1/250 or higher.
saskphotog
Do a custom white balance before the competition begins, especially if you are shooting Jpeg. Not as essential if you are shooting Raw, but helpful even then too.

SteveH
Here's how I was taught to photograph birds, which has some similarity to photogrphing divers. ISO and aperture set to get shutter speed faster than 1/250. Use AIServo. Set to multiple exposures. Set focus area to the center dot alone. You might want to shoot somebody else first and check your histogram/white balance etc. Try some birds on the wing, too. Practice. It's an athletic skill as well, and a bit more difficult than it looks.
